Who takes part in the carol singing?
In the past, only village residents were involved. In recent years, in order to ensure the tradition does not die out, we have been joined by a growing number of outsiders, some of whom travel a considerable distance. They tell us they feel honoured to take part and we are grateful to them for their support. Eddie Upton, Director of Folk South West, has been a great friend to Odcombe, bringing singers from the Stanchester Quire, leading some rehearsals and "conducting" - or at least organising proceedings - on the night.    It is one of the strengths of our tradition that there are still several village families whose members take part today, following in the footsteps of their parents, grandparents and great grandparents. Some are 6th generation singers! Several of the present carollers have taken part each year for well over 60 years. One of our carollers has quoted his grandfather's diary, which describes how aged just 5. he was allowed 'to go out with the singers' and to carry the lantern, with his father (a local preacher), keeping him company.
