This Clock, hidden away high up in the Church Tower, was built for the Church and paid for by the congregation.
It was installed in 1857, to mark the 25th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s coronation.
The Tower is unusual in that it displays four clock faces, East South, West and North, and the powerful clock mechanism drives all four of these the clock faces, as well as controlling the bell which chimes every hour, day and night.
The Clock keeps very good time, and is lovingly and successfully maintained by dedicated members of the congregation, so villagers have no excuse for being late for services!.
"In past times the clock was wound up by hand and the village had an official 'Clock Winder'. It then was taken over by the bell ringers (as the clock is situated in the ringing chamber). About 12 years ago with a very kind donation from a member of the congregation the clock winding mechanism was automated and with a series of micro-switches, electric motors and pulleys the winding is now done by electricity.
However there is still the ocasional glitch which is usually righted by the ringers who also change the settings from GMT to BST and back.
When putting the clock 'back', the whole system has to be wound forward. On a recent occasion three young girls, who at the time were all under ten and who live near the church, saw the hands rotating at a speed late one evening and were sure the spirits had risen! They took a great deal of convincing all was well."
